Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) was a Finnish polymath, physicist, poet and linguist. He is best known for synthesizing the Finnish national epic, Kalevala.
He worked as a district doctor of Kajaani in 1833–1853 and created Kalevala during this time.
This bronze statue presents him as a young district doctor. Revealed in 1942, it was the first public sculpture in Kajaani.
Flowers are always put on statue on the Kalevala Day (February 28th), which celebrates the Finnish Culture.
