During this walking tour, participants will learn about the origins, history, and present day of the nearly 375-year-old city of Kajaani. The route is approximately 2.5 km long. Along the way, sights include Kajaani Castle (demolished in 1716), the eventful history of the River Kajaaninjoki (tar rowing, hydroelectric plants), the Town Hall (1841), the Art Museum (1936/1993), the Lutheran and Orthodox churches (1897 and 1959), as well as new construction projects. The city’s founder, Count Per Brahe, is greeted at the Market Square, which offers a view of the recently thoroughly and award-winningly renovated theater building.
The route is suitable for those with proper footwear and reasonable physical condition. There are no significant changes in elevation. The pace is leisurely. In the summer, it is possible to visit the churches. Except for the castle ruins, the route is accessible, meaning the castle is viewed from outside the walls.
