Antti Mäkinen joined the Kainuu Museum as a researcher-photographer in the autumn of 1993 and documentary photography has been one of his duties even as museum director.
One of the missions of museums is to record today’s life and phenomena for future generations. Photography is one part of the recording process. In the Kainuu Museum, documentation was done by photographing mainly on black and white film and sometimes on slide film, until 2009, when the museum switched to digital photography.
The exhibition Museomiehen kuvia (Museum Man’s Pictures) shows that in 30 years, our environment has changed a lot. Buildings have been demolished and fashions have changed. The photographed moments have become history. Sometimes a photo session has been a unique moment, never to be repeated again. Some of the pictures have been taken in places where the general public has no access.
