Rehjansaari Island

Rehjansaari on Lake Nuasjärvi
A few kilometres from the centre of Kajaani, Rehjansaari on Lake Nuasjärvi is a small, natural and pleasant trekking destination all year round.

In summer, Rehjansaari is easily accessible by boat, canoe or even rowing. In winter, the island is accessed by an ice rink, which is suitable for both traditional and free skiing. The kayaking route starts at Kuurna in Kajaani, and the island’s beaches offer several moorings and landing places.

Accommodation and services

You can stay free of charge in tents on the Rehjansaari Island, respecting everyone’s rights. There are several fireplaces on the island, and firewood can be obtained from log piles, for example in the yard of the Kuusela cottage. In the south-western part of the island you will find two caverns, which are ideal for picnics and cosy campfires. There are also public toilets (remember to bring your own toilet paper) in the vicinity of the cottages.

The City of Kajaani has leased part of the buildings on the island to Luonnollisesti Oulujärvi Oy, which is responsible for the main building in Toivolahti and the rental and maintenance of the Puolukkarinne and Koskela cottages. No other buildings on the island are currently rented out, so it is advisable to consider the location of the rented cottages and other buildings when choosing a camping site.

Activities

Rehjansaari is popular with hikers all year round. In summer, the island’s circular hiking and canoeing trails offer spectacular scenery and natural tranquillity. In winter, the island’s campfires provide an excellent setting for winter hiking.

The City of Kajaani takes care of the island’s camping facilities and maintenance. In 2022-23, four jetties were renovated and two half-huts, two cooking huts and  a covered campfire site were built. All fireplaces are free to use and firewood is available from nearby logging sites. Cooking stoves allow you to prepare meals for a larger group.

Trash-free camping

The principles of trash-free camping are followed in Rehjansaari. Please take away everything you bring with you, so that nature remains clean and beautiful for all visitors.
