Boat transportation to Ärjä Island departs from Ruunaniemi in Kajaani (Ruunaniementie 70, 87800 Kajaani). The boat trip is approximately 4 kilometers long and takes about 5-15 minutes depending on the weather conditions. Prices start from €15/person/one way.

Please note that the boat transportation requires at least three participants to be carried out. If the required number of participants is not reached 24 hours before the departure time, we will contact those who have already purchased tickets. We will offer an alternative departure time or a full refund.

You can choose either a one-way or a round-trip ticket. Outbound and return tickets can be purchased for different days. If you are buying multiple tickets at once and are unable to purchase them for your desired departure, there is not enough available space for that departure. Please try another departure time.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on boat trips. The first dog travels on the owner’s ticket, and an additional fee of €5/dog is charged for extra dogs.

Activities and Services on Ärjä Island

There are many ways to spend a summer day on Ärjä Island. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), hiking, geocaching, trail running, and swimming are just a few examples. You can also simply relax on the magnificent sandy beaches and enjoy the sun or cycle around the island.

  • The summer café is open daily from June 1 to August 18, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering coffee, donuts, ice cream, soft drinks, and sweets. You can also rent a SUP board, kayak, bicycle, or rowing boat from the café.
  • In the summer, you can also meet sheep grazing on the island from June 3 to August 18, 2024. The sheep are especially popular with children. Ärjä Island is part of the Rokua Geopark ridge formation, which extends from Lieksa to Hailuoto, offering stunning scenery and natural wonders.

There is a well on Ärjä Island where you can fill your water bottle. The cleanliness of the well water is tested annually. Ärjä Island follows the principles of litter-free hiking.
