Pietari Brahe founded Kajaani in 1651. The statue, designed by sculptor Yrjö Liipola, was unveiled in 1954 and originally stood on Kruununpuodinmäki hill near Ämmäkoski. In 1976, the statue was moved to Kauppatori (market square), which was renovated to celebrate the city’s 325th anniversary.
