The Pohjan Pioneeri memorial is located near the Kajaani tarred canal and was built in 1998.
The Pohjan Pioneer Battalion was previously stationed in Oulu as part of the Pohjan Brigade, but was relocated to Kajaani on September 25, 1998 as part of the reorganization of the armed forces. The pioneer battalion brought the anchor with them, which was part of a traditional stone in Oulu that was ceremoniously carried through the Hiukkavaara gate. The anchor is attached to a rock downstream from Ämmäkoski in Kajaani and marks the landing of the battalion.
